Despite Industry Challenges, Geyserville’s Pedroncelli Winery Sees a Bright Future Chris Lehoux, March 4, 2025 Pedroncelli Winery in Dry Creek Valley, with a heritage spanning 98 years, is adapting to the evolving wine industry landscape while maintaining its legacy of Zinfandel production. Despite challenges like decreased wine sales and changing consumer preferences, the winery has embraced innovation as it looks towards the future. The winery was established in 1934 by Giovanni (John Sr.) and Julia Pedroncelli on a property they purchased in 1927. Initially, the land was planted with Zinfandel, the signature grape that continues to define Pedroncelli today. The winery has seen tremendous growth, operating under the stewardship of three generations, during which it expanded vineyards, tasting rooms, and distribution. Julie Pedroncelli St. John, the current president and third-generation co-owner, emphasizes the importance of reaching new audiences and adapting strategies to survive industry shifts. This includes diversifying the product line, as seen with the introduction of a no-alcohol Syrah and a Provence-style rosé—representing a significant pivot for a winery founded on Zinfandel. Despite the unpredictability of Zinfandel’s popularity, Pedroncelli stays committed to this varietal. The winery produces approximately 15,000 cases of Zinfandel annually, including a special old-vine blend known as Mother Clone from vines over a century old, which are celebrated for their resilience and quality. Under the guidance of winemaker Montse Reece, who has been with Pedroncelli for 19 years, the winery maintains traditional winemaking techniques. Her emphasis on balancing acidity over sugar levels aligns with current trends towards fresher, lighter wines. This approach extends to the newly introduced low-alcohol Syrah, which aims to capture a growing market interested in lower alcohol content wines. Recent years have shown promising growth for Pedroncelli, with sales surging by 41% last year and significant expansion in distribution channels. This resilience amid industry headwinds speaks volumes about the winery’s adaptability and potential for future success. In addition to the Syrah and rosé, the winery has also launched a new sparkling Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay sourced locally. These innovations reflect a broader commitment to embracing change while honoring the family legacy. For more on Pedroncelli Winery’s storied past and bright future, visit Pedroncelli Winery.
