Uncorking Creativity: The Artful Fusion of Wine and Dance in DanceAspen’s ‘Take Flight’ Chris Lehoux, July 14, 2025 Throughout history, wine and dance have played vital roles in celebrations, bringing people together. This connection is explored in DanceAspen’s “Take Flight – Grapes with Height,” an event that creatively pairs dance performances with wine tastings, held at Felix Roasting Co. in Hotel Jerome. The intimate setting allows guests to experience dance up close, creating an immersive atmosphere. Laurel Winton, DanceAspen’s Founder and Executive Director, highlights how the event not only promotes their upcoming show “Shifting Forms,” set to premiere on August 27 and 28 at the Wheeler Opera House, but also enhances the artists’ performances in a unique way. Last year’s event coincided with the Food & Wine Classic, but this year, it was strategically scheduled before their gala and season premieres. The dance-wine pairing concept was introduced by Managing Director Allison Walsh, aiming to cater to diverse tastes benefiting both dance aficionados and wine enthusiasts. The evening commenced with a sparkling Blanc de Blancs from Southwest Colorado, accompanying “Sunny,” choreographed by Matthew Gilmore. This lively piece, performed by Myles Tracy and Jane Mumford, embodies joy, matching the wine’s effervescence, inspired by a golden-hour performance. Next was “Bud Burn Bloom,” another choreography by Gilmore that symbolizes the cycle of cultural resilience through contrasting chaotic movements and a regrowth narrative. This dance was paired with a light-bodied wine from the Alps, embodying the spirit of the Aspen community. “Love All,” choreographed by Jonah Delgado, uses tennis as a metaphor for love, transitioning through phases of intimacy and humor. Complemented by a red pinot noir from the Santa Cruz mountains, it mirrors the dance’s assertive yet playful nature. The event concluded with “Mother Tongue,” choreographed by Ihsan Rustem. This duet explores complex communication layers, paired with a bold red wine from Ribera del Duero, Spain, known for its challenging grape-growing conditions, echoing the intricate nature of communication.
