Remembering Peter M. F. Sichel: The Multifaceted Life of a Wine Importer, Author, and CIA Spy

Chris Lehoux, March 6, 2025

Peter M.F. Sichel, a prominent wine merchant and author, passed away at the age of 102 on February 24, 2025. He was celebrated not just for his expertise in German wines but also for his remarkable history as a CIA spy, a tale he shared in his autobiography, The Secrets of My Life (2016).

Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1922, Sichel grew up in his grandfather’s wine business. His journey took a dramatic turn when he was captured by the Germans during World War II while working in Bordeaux. After a daring escape to Portugal and Spain, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was trained by the Office of Strategic Services to turn German POWs into spies. By 1946, he was reporting on Soviet actions in East Germany, eventually joining the CIA, where he served until 1960, with postings in Berlin, Washington, and Hong Kong.

Sichel later took over his family’s wine business and introduced the German white wine Blue Nun to the U.S. market. This semi-sweet blend, which included Muller-Thurgau, Sylvaner, and Gewürztraminer, became immensely popular, with sales soaring to millions of cases worldwide by the 1980s. His book, The Wines of Germany (1980), was the first authoritative guide on the topic in English.

Known for his engaging personality, Sichel was admired by wine enthusiasts for both his extensive knowledge and his storytelling abilities. His approachable manner and wit made him a beloved figure in the wine community. Many fondly recalled how his wines were often a first introduction to the world of wine, especially among students and young adults.

Having lived through some of the most fascinating and tumultuous periods of the 20th century, Peter Sichel’s life was a blend of experiences that made him a truly interesting person. His contributions to the world of wine and his unique background as a spy added depth to his character, leaving a lasting legacy for those fortunate to have known him.
