Preserving Tradition: Staying True to the Legacy of an Oregon Wine Brand

Chris Lehoux, August 26, 2025

The Oregon wine industry has faced significant changes in recent years, especially in light of the pandemic and a shift in consumer interest among younger generations. This evolving landscape is marked by a series of mergers and acquisitions, with many local wineries being absorbed by larger corporate entities, particularly from California.

In this environment, Archery Summit Winery, located in the Willamette Valley, has managed to retain its unique identity despite transitioning through multiple ownerships, including its founder, former Olympic skier Gary Andrus, and now the Napa-based Crimson Wine Group. The winery produces around 10,000 cases annually, positioning itself as a mid-sized player in the market.

The winery has recently appointed a new winemaker, Kim Abramson, who previously contributed to the success of another prominent Oregon brand, Lingua Franca. Abramson views her role as an opportunity to build on Archery Summit’s legacy while guiding it toward a promising future. She emphasizes the importance of patience and understanding the history and nuances that shape the winery’s character.

During her initial months, Abramson has focused on asking critical questions to grasp the essence of the brand. She’s keen on maintaining the winery’s identity while also embracing fresh ideas to enhance its storytelling. Although Archery Summit has seen several winemakers come and go, she sees the evolving narrative as a chance to learn from the past, allowing the estate’s distinct terroir to take center stage.

Abramson believes that evolution within a winery is crucial for its longevity. She advocates for continuous inquiry into the winemaking process, suggesting that even subtle changes, like alterations in oak use and harvest timing, can significantly impact the final product. Her goal is to honor the established strengths of the Oregon wine brands before her while also injecting new energy and vision into Archery Summit.

Through her leadership, Abramson hopes to ensure that the winery’s wines reflect the authenticity of its vineyards, with the winemaking techniques serving as a supportive framework for that expression.
