The Revitalization of Napa’s Newton Vineyard: A New Era Begins Chris Lehoux, September 5, 2025 Napa’s Newton Vineyard has found new life as it has been purchased by wine enthusiasts Nick Livanos and Eric Bryan Seuthe, ending its closure earlier this year. The estate, once a thriving operation, faced several challenges, including ownership changes, devastating fires, and a shuttering announcement from its former owner LVMH. Livanos and Seuthe, who have a deep appreciation for Napa Valley and its wines, acquired the 487-acre property and brand without disclosing the purchase price. "We are really excited about what we are going to be doing with this property," expressed Seuthe, who splits his time between Los Angeles and Napa, where he already owns a vineyard. The friends met at a wine club event five years ago and gradually developed a mutual interest in owning a vineyard. Livanos is a principal at Renkert Oil, managing different aspects of the business alongside his passion for winemaking. In a statement, LVMH expressed confidence in the new owners, hoping they will continue to respect and honor the land and its legacy. Despite its beauty, the vineyard is in need of significant restoration. The 2020 fires ravaged the property, leaving only five acres of the original 68 acres under vine. However, the infrastructure for vineyards and irrigation remains intact, and the winery caves survived. Before the closure, LVMH had initiated a replanting program on the estate, primarily for Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. The new owners intend to extend those efforts and aim to produce Newton wines starting with the 2025 vintage, under the guidance of winemaker Caryn Harrison. A Brief History of Newton Vineyard Established by Peter Newton, a significant figure in Napa’s wine scene, the vineyard is famed for its innovative winemaking and unique terroir. Peter, originally an English journalist and businessman, founded another well-known winery, Sterling Vineyards, before creating Newton Vineyard in 1977. The property is renowned for its iconic Unfiltered Chardonnay and impressive winemaking talent that has passed through its doors. After LVMH acquired a controlling stake in 2001, they invested heavily in renovations and organic farming. Yet, the future turned bleak when the Glass Fire of 2020 destroyed much of the estate, leading to an eventual closure in early 2025. Moving Forward The new owners are optimistic about reinvigorating this significant property. Eric Seuthe emphasized their passion for wine, highlighting the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise. “If you have a dream, don’t stop dreaming. You never know,” echoed Livanos, underscoring the partners’ commitment to reviving the vineyard’s storied legacy. For more information about Newton Vineyard, visit Wine Spectator.
