Madera Winery Faces Possible Layoffs as Box Wine Contract Draws to a Close Chris Lehoux, January 16, 2026 The future of Mission Bell Winery in Madera is uncertain as it prepares for layoffs after losing its contract with Gallo Winery for producing boxed wine, specifically the Black Box brand. This winery, established in 1919 by Krikor Arakelian, has historically been a key player in the San Joaquin Valley’s wine industry, employing up to 400 people and bottling around 10 million cases annually. Over recent years, ownership shifted from local to corporate, culminating in a deal in 2020 when Constellation Brands sold several brands, including Mission Bell, to Gallo Winery. Despite establishing temporary supply contracts for wine production, Gallo and Constellation have decided to conclude these agreements, leading to significant operational changes at Mission Bell. According to company spokesperson Bethany Burke, this transition means that approximately 200 employees might be laid off, although estimates from local officials suggest the total could rise to about 300. Production of boxed wine is expected to cease by the end of March. Madera County Economic Development Commission Executive Director Kristina Gallagher has stated that the county is ready to assist those affected by the layoffs. County Supervisor David Rogers reiterated the county’s commitment to support these employees, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the local economy. Gallo Winery, a privately-owned company founded in 1933, is recognized as a leading global producer of wines, spirits, and other beverages. Constellation Brands operates more than 100 brands around the world, employing around 8,000 people across 40 facilities.
