Your Favorite Wine Choice: A Window into Your Personality, According to Psychologists

Chris Lehoux, February 23, 2026

An AI analysis of wine reviews reveals that your wine preference can significantly reflect your personality. Researchers from Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University discovered a link between the Big Five personality traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism— and individuals’ tastes in wine, particularly concerning the level of alcohol content.

Psychologists explain that people who score high in openness and agreeableness tend to prefer higher-alcohol wines. Those high in openness are often curious and eager for new experiences, which attracts them to the complex flavors of these wines. Conversely, agreeable individuals may be drawn to more prestigious wines, aligning with social norms and the perceived quality associated with higher-alcohol options.

Interestingly, individuals who rate high in extraversion and neuroticism tend to gravitate toward lower-alcohol wines. Extraverts favor milder wine flavors, likely preferring them because they allow for prolonged socializing without overwhelming intoxication. On the other hand, the neurotic individuals’ preference for these wines can stem from their need for control, as lower-alcohol wines offer a way to manage their drinking.

Those categorized as conscientious exhibited diverse wine preferences that spanned both ends of the spectrum, with no clear pattern. While conscientious people generally prioritize health and discipline, leading to lower-alcohol choices, their focus on quality could also draw them to higher-status wines. Thus, their conflicting inclinations often resulted in varied tastes.

Ultimately, the study highlights how personality traits influence our basic preferences, like the wine we choose. The next time there’s a disagreement on wine selections, it may be more than just taste at play—it could be a reflection of personality differences as well.
