Remembering Martine Saunier: A Pioneer in Wine Importing and Filmmaking

Chris Lehoux, February 10, 2025

Martine Saunier, a pioneering wine importer and filmmaker, passed away on February 9 from lung cancer at the age of 91. Known for introducing many fine Burgundy and Rhône wines to American consumers in the 1970s and ’80s, she built a respected import business and later transitioned into producing wine region documentaries.

Born in Paris in 1934, Saunier spent her summers in the Mâconnais, where her family had vineyards. Her early experiences during grape harvests instilled in her a deep appreciation for wine. After studying business, she worked in public relations for Japan Airlines before moving to the U.S. in 1964 after marrying a San Francisco doctor. Wine tastings in Napa Valley led her to pursue a path in the wine industry.

In 1969, Saunier took a job with a Bay Area wine importer and soon made her debut buying trip to France. Through a series of encounters, she began importing some of the best wines from Burgundy, Rhône, Champagne, and Portugal. A standout moment early in her career came when she tasted a remarkable Châteauneuf-du-Pape that led her to establish her own import company, Martine’s Wines, in 1979.

Her remarkable palate and determination allowed her to build strong relationships with esteemed producers like Henri Jayer and Lalou Bize-Leroy. She became known for her steadfast belief in selling high-quality, estate-bottled wines. By the mid-1970s, she secured contracts with top retailers and restaurants across the country, showcasing her meticulous selection of wines.

In 2009, the documentary filmmaker David Kennard approached Saunier to create a film about influential wine importers, which evolved into two films focusing specifically on Burgundy and Champagne, released in the following years. Saunier sold her import business in 2012 but continued to influence the wine industry until her passing.

Saunier leaves behind a rich legacy in the wine world and is survived by her stepsons, including musician Huey Lewis. Her passion and commitment to quality wines inspired many, particularly women in the industry, and her contributions had a lasting impact on American wine culture.
