Tribeca Grill: A Farewell to New York’s Iconic Wine Restaurant After 34 Years

Chris Lehoux, February 13, 2025

After 34 years, New York’s famed Tribeca Grill is set to close its doors on March 1. Founded in 1990 by chef Drew Nieporent and actor Robert De Niro, the restaurant has been a staple in Lower Manhattan, renowned for its fine dining and extensive wine list.

Nieporent remarked on the changing landscape of dining in New York City, noting a generational shift in how fine dining institutions are perceived. He expressed pride in the longevity of Tribeca Grill, stating, “There’s got to be a time to move on.” The closure reflects broader trends in the industry, including rising costs and a shift in patron preferences towards dining in outer boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens.

In its early years, Tribeca Grill’s wine list featured just 60 selections. Wine director David Gordon significantly expanded it over time, leading to consistent recognition, including the prestigious Wine Spectator Grand Award since 2002. The restaurant’s cellar currently houses around 25,000 bottles but there are no intentions to keep it operational post-closure.

Gordon highlighted the restaurant’s appeal not only to food lovers but also to high-profile personalities, recounting moments where various celebrities graced the dining room, including Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger.

The eatery features elevated New American cuisine, offering dishes like pan-roasted Amish chicken and butternut squash ravioli, paired with a well-curated wine selection, especially strong in Rhône varieties.

As its final days approach, Tribeca Grill is offering a special $59 prix-fixe menu alongside its standard offerings. Although the closure is bittersweet for the staff, many of whom have been with the restaurant for over two decades, both Nieporent and Gordon recognized it as the appropriate time to say goodbye.

Tribeca Grill’s legacy in New York’s culinary scene is undeniable, having played a vital role in the city’s food and wine community. Reflecting on his journey, Nieporent shared, “I’m so very proud of it, very happy.”
