The Best Zinfandel Wines Showcased at the San Francisco International Wine Competition

Chris Lehoux, March 2, 2025

The San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC) recently announced its 2024 winners, and five standout Zinfandel wines made it to the finals. Leading the pack was the Mettler Family Vineyards’ 2021 Epicenter Zinfandel, which not only topped the Zinfandel category but was also honored as Best in Show Red Wine.

Zinfandel is primarily associated with California, where it has become a beloved red wine grape. Originating from Croatia and brought to the U.S. by Italian immigrants in the 19th century, it has developed a unique identity in California’s warm climate. This grape is known for its bold, fruit-forward profile, often highlighting flavors like blackberry, raspberry, and black cherry, complemented by spicy and earthy notes.
