Exciting Updates for the North Coast Wine Challenge 2023: What to Expect! Chris Lehoux, March 15, 2025 The North Coast Wine Challenge, a prestigious wine competition solely focused on California’s North Coast, will begin on April 1, 2025. This year marks the 13th annual event, with a revamped format that emphasizes local expertise. Thirty-four judges, all from the region, including winemakers, sommeliers, and media professionals, will convene at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds to taste and evaluate over 1,000 wines over the course of two days. To be eligible for the competition, wines must be produced with grapes sourced from California’s North Coast AVA, which includes Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Marin, Lake, and Solano counties. Additionally, the wineries must be located in California and label their wine in accordance with North Coast AVAs. Notably, new categories have been introduced this year, including categories for orange wines and nouveau-style reds, which were previously judged alongside traditional wines of the same varietal. Daryl Groom, the chief judge, expressed concerns that these newer styles had been overshadowed and stated, “It’s our goal to give all the wines entered the best opportunity to score high.” In response to changing consumer preferences, the challenge has also added a category for nonalcoholic wines. Groom noted that demand for these wines is increasing among retailers, although he is uncertain if there will be many entries from the North Coast. Additionally, a new "Winemaker of the Year" award will be introduced, recognizing the winemaker with the highest number of gold medals. This addition complements the existing "Best of the Best" award, given to the top-rated wine. Last year, the highest accolade was awarded to Trentadue Winery for its 2021 La Storia Cuvée 32, an Italian-style red blend. The winners of the North Coast Wine Challenge will be announced via Facebook Live on April 2. Moreover, those interested in tasting the winning wines can attend the North Coast Wine & Food Festival on June 14 at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, which will feature food pairings from notable local restaurants.
