Remembering James Laube: A Legacy in Wine Journalism as Wine Spectator’s Napa Bureau Chief

Chris Lehoux, March 22, 2025

James Laube, the longtime senior editor and Napa bureau chief for Wine Spectator, has passed away at the age of 73 following a brief illness. Over his nearly four-decade career with the magazine, Laube played a pivotal role in elevating both Wine Spectator and the California wine industry to international prominence.

Marvin R. Shanken, editor and publisher of Wine Spectator, reflected on Laube’s impact, stating, “California wine would not be what it is without James Laube.” He noted Laube’s depth of knowledge about California wines, his collaboration in shaping the magazine’s direction, and his profound influence on the perception of Napa Cabernet wines.

Laube’s journey into the world of wine began in his youth; he was raised in Anaheim, California and developed a dual passion for surfing and wine while studying history at San Diego State University. Laube’s early wine experiences coincided with the emergence of California’s fine-wine renaissance in the 1960s and 70s, which he later chronicled in his writings.

In 1978, he moved to Napa Valley to serve as the Napa County bureau chief for the Vallejo-Times Herald, where he reported on local news surrounding the burgeoning wine scene. His freelance contributions to Wine Spectator started in 1980, leading to a full-time role in 1983 as the magazine transitioned into a major force in wine publishing.

Throughout his tenure, Laube reviewed wines from California and around the globe, enforcing high standards in blind tastings and establishing industry protocols. He also authored several books, including California’s Great Cabernets, which featured his tasting notes and profiles of notable winemakers.

Despite retiring in 2019, Laube remained an influential figure in Napa and a champion of the wine industry. He is survived by his family, including his two children and grandchildren. His contributions have left an indelible mark on wine journalism and the appreciation of California wines.
