An Unforgettable Auction: Treasures from the Cellar of the Counterfeit Crusader

Chris Lehoux, June 7, 2025

William “Bill” Koch, known for his extensive wine collection and efforts against wine counterfeiting, is auctioning nearly 7,800 bottles from his impressive 43,000-bottle cellar through Christie’s. The auction is scheduled for June 12 to 14, and follows a previous successful sale in 2016 where Koch’s collection fetched $21.9 million at Sotheby’s.

Koch began collecting wine in the late 1970s, during which he invested more than $12 million on coveted bottles, including verticals of renowned Bordeaux such as Pétrus and Lafite. His collection even includes the infamous "Jefferson Bordeaux" bottles, which led to a quest for authenticity after questions about their provenance arose.

Koch’s unexpected journey into legal battles against counterfeiters, including major auction houses, has transformed the wine collecting landscape. He calls for auctioneers to prioritize authenticity and has partnered with Christie’s new team, citing their expertise and commitment to high standards in wine presentation.

In deciding to auction a significant portion of his collection, Koch expressed the desire to share his wines with new collectors and wine lovers. He stated that it was time for others to enjoy them, as he would not be able to consume the 20,000 bottles remaining in his cellar. The wines he chose to keep are significant not just for their value, but for their emotional resonance and memories associated with family celebrations and friendships.

Koch values the process of authenticity; every bottle in the auction has undergone rigorous inspection, including evaluations by vineyards and specialists to confirm their origins and condition. He highlighted that collectors today are increasingly educated on counterfeiting and have more resources at their disposal to avoid fraud.

Despite scaling back his collection, Koch intends to enjoy the remaining bottles he has, focusing on memorable wines shared with friends and family. He recalls fond moments tied to particular bottles, including gatherings with U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and other notable figures, underscoring the joy of wine as a communal experience rather than merely an investment.

Koch’s story serves as a compelling narrative of passion, persistence, and the evolving dynamics of the wine auction world.
