Unveiling the Latest Wine Trends from the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards

Chris Lehoux, June 19, 2025

Decanter has revealed the winners of its 22nd annual World Wine Awards, marking a significant event in the global wine community. As one of the most prestigious wine competitions, the DWWA showcased over 16,000 entries from 57 countries, evaluated by 248 top wine experts, including a record number of Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine.

Medal Overview

At the DWWA, medals are a measure of excellence. This year, 50 wines earned the coveted “Best in Show” distinction, while 137 Platinum and 732 Gold medals were awarded overall, indicating that only about 5% of the entries reached the highest excellence tier. Additionally, the Value Gold Top 30 list highlighted exceptional wines priced under $20, demonstrating that quality isn’t always synonymous with a high price tag.

Top Performing Countries

France led the medal tally with 187 awards, including 14 Best in Show, while Italy followed closely with 138 top-tier medals. Spain also excelled, particularly its Sherry producers, and celebrated notable victories, including five Best in Show awards. The United Kingdom stood out in sparkling wines, securing its own Best in Show award for the first time with a magnum. Greece experienced a standout year with a total of 20 top-tier medals, and the other European countries like Portugal and Slovenia also made impressive contributions.

Global Recognition

Outside Europe, Australia and New Zealand showcased strong performances, with Australia taking home 80 top-tier medals and four Best in Show awards. The U.S. made a notable impact, with California achieving two Best in Show awards, one of which was for Clos du Val for the second consecutive year. Argentina saw a dramatic increase in success, with a record number of top-tier medals, reinforcing its reputation for value-driven quality.

Emerging Trends

Some prevailing trends from the competition include a growing recognition of orange wines and fortified varieties. Lesser-known grape varieties gained attention, with Argentina’s first Gold for a Criolla wine and Italy’s debut Gold for an Erbaluce di Caluso.

The DWWA continues to be a beacon of quality and diversity in the wine world, highlighting both iconic wines and emerging regions. For a complete list of this year’s winners and tasting notes, visit the Decanter website.
