Jeff Cohn Cellars in Sonoma Shuts Its Doors: A Look Back at a Winemaking Legacy

Sonoma winemaker Jeff Cohn, recognized for his expertise in producing top-tier California Zinfandel and Syrah, has announced the closure of his winery, Jeff Cohn Cellars, after the 2024 vintage. Cohn and his wife, Alexandra, shared this decision with Wine Spectator, indicating that after nearly 30 years in the industry, it was time for a change. This marks another closing within the wine community amidst a turbulent period for many wineries.

The Zinfandel and Syrah sectors have encountered significant challenges during the current market downturn. As Alexandra noted, “It’s not an easy time to sell any wine.” The couple feels this is the right time to step back, recognizing the industry’s evolving landscape. Cohn’s wines have consistently earned high praise, often receiving ratings of 90 points or above. Their production has decreased drastically, from about 3,000 cases in 2023 to minimal output anticipated for 2024.

Jeff, now 63, reflected on his journey, stating, “I think I’ve pretty much accomplished everything I wanted to do.” His career includes significant tenure at Rosenblum, where he served as head winemaker. Cohn began his foray into winemaking at Boordy Vineyard in Maryland, followed by studies in chemistry and enology. In 1996, he launched his first brand, JC Cellars, gradually evolving into Jeff Cohn Cellars with a tasting room established in Sonoma County.

Over his career, Cohn has collaborated with esteemed winemakers like Yves Cuilleron and Yves Gangloff. He envisions a future role as a consultant or collaborator to keep engaging with the industry.

Amid these transitions, both Cohns have contemplated selling the winery over the past year, but the current market conditions made potential sales uncertain. They observed an overabundance of wine in California, prompting many growers to leave grapes unpicked in 2024. Ultimately, they aligned with the growing sentiment in the industry, similar to other friends like Mike and Kendall Officer of Carlisle, who made similar decisions. Reflecting on their next chapter, Alexandra expressed a desire for freedom and adventure, saying, “You want to continue your life and go have some fun, right?”
