Celebrating 590 Years of Riesling: A Toast to Purity, Precision, and Passion in Wine Making

Chris Lehoux, June 28, 2025

Riesling, Germany’s flagship grape, commemorates its 590th anniversary this year, marking nearly six centuries of renowned wines celebrated for their purity, finesse, and capacity to age. This grape is central to Germany’s wine identity, believed to have been cultivated even prior to its first documented mention in 1435 from a cellar inventory in Rüsselsheim, near the Rheingau. Over time, Riesling flourished along the Rhine and Mosel valleys, particularly in steep, slate-rich vineyards that highlight its terroir.

Riesling has been integral to Germany’s top vineyard sites across regions like Mosel, Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, and Nahe. Its reputation soared in the 18th and 19th centuries when esteemed German Rieslings often fetched higher prices than First Growth Bordeaux and Burgundy Grand Crus. Today, Riesling accounts for about 25% of Germany’s vineyard production.

This grape is highly expressive, reflecting the characteristics of slam, limestone, or sandstone soils from which it grows. Riesling is cherished for its versatility, capable of producing an array from bone-dry to ultra-sweet wines. Its natural high acidity ensures its vibrancy and longevity, with top Rieslings capable of aging for decades and developing complex flavors like honeyed fruit and petrol notes over time.

Riesling excels in cooler climates, gradually ripening while maintaining its aromatic complexity, resulting in a broad spectrum of styles including Trocken (dry), Kabinett, Auslese, Spätlese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein, occasionally sourced from the same vineyard. Additionally, it is used to craft sparkling wines in Germany.

The aroma and taste profile of Riesling is distinctively fragrant. Young, dry examples exude vibrant notes of green apple, lime, lemon zest, pear, and subtle floral hints. As the wine ages, it develops characteristic kerosene notes, valued among aficionados. The natural acidity of Riesling balances its sweetness and fruitiness, resulting in a refreshing finish that lingers with fruity notes.

A selection of German Riesling wines illustrates this complexity:

  1. Karl Haidle, Ritzling, 2021 Riesling Trocken – A dry, crisp Riesling showcasing green apple and lime aromas, with a mineral-driven palate and a clean, tangy finish.
  2. Dönnhoff, Oberhäuser Leistenberg, Riesling Kabinett, 2021 – Characterized by delicate sweetness and vibrant acidity, this wine offers aromas of white peach and lemon blossom, with a crisp palate of green apple and pear.
  3. Monchhof, Mosel Slate, Riesling Spätlese – Lightly sweet with aromas of peach and honeysuckle, balanced by fresh acidity and a clean, lingering slate finish.
  4. Selbach-Oster, Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese, Schmitt, 2019 – A rich, golden-yellow wine with aromas of canned peaches and honeycomb, featuring a luscious palate of apricot and ginger, balanced by lively acidity.
  5. Dr. Loosen, Riesling Beerenauslese, 2017 – This rare dessert wine exhibits intense aromas of dried apricot and honeyed figs, with a syrupy, rich palate and a racy acidity that ensures a lingering sweet finish.
  6. Dr. Loosen Bros, Riesling Sparkling – A refreshing sparkling Riesling displaying bright fruit with notes of green apple and citrus, creating a crisp and enjoyable aperitif.

Riesling is celebrated globally; its diverse expressions offer something for every palate, from sweet to dry and beyond. Celebrating its 590th anniversary is an opportunity to explore the remarkable variety and depth of Germany’s Riesling wines.
