Embrace the Good Life: Why Wine Should Be a Part of Your Daily Rituals

Chris Lehoux, June 29, 2025

It all began serendipitously when I found myself in a thriving wine region while working at a Finger Lakes newspaper. There, at one of the world’s premier research centers, I started to chart the growth of the local wine industry and connect with the pioneers who were shaping it. A casual lunch with a magazine publisher encouraged me to explore writing for trade publications.

Years later, my journey led me back to Northeast Pennsylvania, where I was fortunate enough to write a wine and drinks column for The Scranton Times-Tribune for almost two decades. As I pen this final piece, I reflect on the evolution of my column, Empty Bottles, which aimed to simplify wine and make it accessible to everyone. Our goal was to present wine as a part of daily life, much like it has been celebrated in Europe and Asia for centuries. I wanted readers to feel confident when venturing into a wine store, and to inspire them to try something new, whatever their personal tastes.

Throughout this journey, I also served as the executive director of the American Wine Society from 2016 to 2022, deepening my engagement with the wine community. It feels appropriate to conclude my column by returning to its roots in the Finger Lakes.

I recommend experiencing some of the pioneering offerings in the region, such as Wagner Vineyards’ 2022 Dry Riesling, featuring notes of white flowers and limestone alongside flavors of white peach, priced at $18. Additionally, Fox Run Vineyards’ 2022 Dry Riesling showcases lime and mineral notes with a refreshing finish, also for $18.

A notable mention is Dr. Konstantin Frank’s 2024 Finger Lakes Rkatsiteli, which presents lemongrass, tropical fruit, and a hint of spice, priced at $20.

If you haven’t explored the Finger Lakes recently, now is an ideal time for a visit, and don’t overlook the fantastic wineries in Pennsylvania. My final piece of advice? Keep an eye out for the 2024 eastern reds as they promise to be remarkable.
