Remembering Burgundy Vintner Nicolas Potel: A Legacy in Wine Excellence

Chris Lehoux, July 1, 2025

Nicolas Potel, a notable figure in the Burgundy wine scene, passed away on June 27 at the age of 56. He was the founder of both Domaine de Bellene and Maison Roche de Bellene, where he gained recognition for crafting exceptional wines.

Potel’s journey was marked by resilience and perseverance. He faced challenges early in life when his father, Gérard, a respected winemaker, died unexpectedly in 1997. This tragedy prompted him and his mother to leave their family home. With a wealth of knowledge and industry contacts, Potel founded a négociant house, Maison Nicolas Potel. However, after financial setbacks and a tumultuous relationship with the larger négociant firm Labouré-Roi, he was ousted from his namesake winery in 2009, leading him to establish Maison Roche de Bellene.

Potel’s impact on the wine community was significant. His innovative approach to winemaking came from a mix of traditional knowledge gained from his father and experience from the wine regions of Australia and California. He was a forward thinker, co-founding the Bellene project in 2008, which blended the roles of négociant and estate winemaker. Under his stewardship, his businesses saw tremendous growth, particularly as he sought out old-vine parcels and committed to environmentally friendly practices within his Beaune cellar.

He is survived by his former wife Anna and their children, Alphonse, Antonia, and Emilien. Potel’s dedication to quality and passion for winemaking left an indelible mark on the Burgundy region and the broader wine community.
