Meet the Italian Wine Robot: Automated Harvesting with Wings, Solar Power, and 72-Hour Work Shifts

Chris Lehoux, August 6, 2025

The Piccini Winery, a historic estate in Chianti Classico, Italy, is embracing innovation with its introduction of Icaro X4, a solar-powered robotic solution designed to enhance vineyard care. The winery, which has been in operation for 140 years, is led by CEO Mario Piccini, who aims to honor his family legacy while adapting to modern agricultural challenges.

Icaro X4 operates using advanced technology that enables it to work continuously for up to 72 hours, even during rain, combating diseases such as downy mildew. The robot employs UV-C light to disrupt the DNA of fungal pathogens and stimulates the natural defenses of the grapevines. This application not only reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers by up to 70% but also aligns with EU sustainability efforts, aiming to halve pesticide usage by 2030.

Under Piccini’s guidance, the winery marries tradition with technology, ensuring that the character of its Sangiovese grapes is preserved. The team has implemented hands-on workshops to educate staff on this new technology, allowing them to combine traditional viticultural practices with robotic assistance. Field trials have facilitated this integration, enhancing the team’s capabilities in managing robotic fleets instead of conventional tractors.

Consumer reaction to this tech-forward approach has been positive, with many wine lovers valuing the blend of heritage and modern farming methods. As sustainability becomes increasingly important among consumers, the Piccini Winery is positioned to meet this demand while aiming to elevate the quality of its wines.

Looking ahead, Piccini envisions a future where AI and robotics are as fundamental to winemaking as traditional oak barrels. With ongoing research into technologies like autonomous pruning robots, the integration of innovation in vineyards is anticipated to expand, promising a new era of sustainable and efficient viticulture.
