Unveiling the Wellness Secrets of a Wine & Travel Writer: Tips for a Balanced Life

Chris Lehoux, September 27, 2025

Colleagues often commented on my transformation at events, asking if I had lost weight. This attention came during a wine dinner in Italy and, while it was a compliment, it was awkwardly delivered in front of others. As a wine educator, judge, and Master of Wine student, my professional life involves substantial eating and drinking while traveling extensively. However, keeping fit under such circumstances posed a challenge.

A few years ago, the demands of my lifestyle led to an alarming moment—I found myself battling weight gain and fatigue, prompting a health scare that forced me to reassess my habits. Determined to make a change, I have lost over twenty pounds in the last two years without resorting to weight loss drugs or fads. Many in the wine and hospitality sectors endure similar struggles with health and addiction, pushing me to share my journey.

My new approach comprises three key components: intermittent fasting, weight training, and nutritional shakes.

The Catalyst for Change
Initially, the wake-up call came when I began experiencing muscle twitches. After a year of consultations and medical tests, I learned I had a condition that caused nutrient absorption issues leading to significant deficiencies. This revelation coincided with the reality of entering midlife, where changes in muscle mass and hormones make weight management increasingly difficult.

Determined to regain control, I researched and developed a regimen I could adhere to easily.

Fasting
I encountered a flexible "fasting-with-food" approach, allowing for lighter meals combined with supplements. This method maintains key health markers like blood pressure and glucose while still offering enough nutrition to stave off cravings. After trying this protocol for three months and subsequently shifting to a 16:8 intermittent fasting schedule for maintenance, I managed to keep my weight off and maintain healthy blood metrics.

However, recognizing the risk of nutrient deficiencies from fasting, I integrated a nutrient-dense meal shake into my routine.

Nutritional Shake
To address the obstacles that come with frequent travel and poor meal options, I began using Ka’Chava, a shake designed to cover nutritional gaps. Each serving includes 25 grams of plant-based protein, fiber, and essential vitamins sourced from over 85 superfoods. This shake enables me to easily maintain my nutrient intake, especially during busy travel days when traditional meals aren’t feasible.

I don’t solely rely on this shake, but I integrate it into my routine for convenience, health, and flavor. Mixing it with frozen fruits and natural ingredients allows me to enjoy it at home and maintain quality nutrition when on the road.

Weight Training
Previously, I leaned towards cardio exercises due to their simplicity. A foot injury changed that, pushing me to reevaluate my fitness regime. I learned that starting in our thirties, we gradually lose muscle mass unless we actively combat it. Resistance training became my focus since it aids in metabolism, bone density, and overall health—benefits that extend well into midlife.

Using just basic equipment like resistance bands, I ensure a well-rounded workout routine covering both upper and lower body strength while minimizing the risk of injury. Consistency, even with shorter sessions of 30-45 minutes, has helped me solidify these changes and improve my health.

Conclusion
I never intended to overhaul my health routine but I’ve now cultivated a lifestyle that works amidst the challenges of frequent travel and midlife changes. My three-part program isn’t medical advice and may not suit everyone, but it’s helped me tackle my health issues effectively. As I reflect while mid-flight after a week of indulgent dining, I look forward to my Ka’Chava shake and returning to the gym, ready for what lies ahead.
