From Gold to Greatness: The Selection Process Behind IWSC’s Top 50 Wine and Spirit Producers

Chris Lehoux, November 13, 2025

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) has recently unveiled its Top 50 Producers, honoring wineries and distilleries that consistently excel in producing high-quality wines and spirits. This list celebrates not just those who win an occasional medal but recognizes sustained excellence over time.

The IWSC, established in 1969 by Anton Massel, integrates blind tasting with scientific analysis, ensuring that products are evaluated with rigorous standards. This prestigious competition draws thousands of entries globally, with expert judges comprising Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, and other industry professionals.

In an interview with Christelle Guibert, CEO of Fine Wine & Spirits, she explained that the Top 50 initiative highlights producers that maintain a consistent high standard across their entire portfolio. This includes innovation in production and a steadfast commitment to quality, whether from established names or boutique producers.

To be considered for the Top 50, producers must have entered at least three products over the last three years, demonstrating their consistent performance and quality. Scores are awarded based on various criteria, including previous medal successes. Notably, whisky producers dominate the Top 50 Spirits list, reflecting the IWSC’s historical strength in this category. Conversely, the Top 50 Wine Producers shows greater diversity, with entries from outside traditional wine-making regions, which speaks to the fragmentation and craft-driven nature of the wine industry.

Guibert emphasizes that consistency and regular participation in the competition are critical for producers aiming to join this elite group. The IWSC not only evaluates entries but also provides detailed feedback, which can greatly enhance a producer’s future performances.

In essence, the Top 50 lists serve as a valuable guide for consumers looking for quality as these producers have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to deliver excellence, making them worthy of recognition in a crowded market.
