The Ultimate Guide to Wine Competitions: Discovering Great Wines

Chris Lehoux, January 28, 2026

The prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition has recently announced its results, highlighting the achievements of Ohio’s wine industry. This competition is renowned as North America’s largest of its kind, drawing thousands of wine entries annually, and this year, Ohio garnered a record 94 total medals, reflecting the increasing quality and dedication of winemakers across the state, especially from the Grand River Valley and Lake Erie Regions.

Among the competition’s distinguished judges, who are highly respected in the global wine community, medals were distributed in several categories, including best of class, double gold, gold, silver, and bronze. The results have ignited excitement among wine enthusiasts and producers alike, positioning Ohio wines on the national stage.

The competition notably favored white wines, which is expected given Ohio’s cool climate conducive to such varieties. Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, and Chardonnays earned significant recognition. However, there were also commendable mentions of red wines, challenging the previously held notion that Ohio couldn’t produce excellent reds. Noteworthy is a historic response from David McIntyre, a prominent wine writer, who praised the state’s red wines after tasting them, affirming their quality.

Although many Ohio red wines were awarded silvers and bronzes, these accolades were achieved alongside some of the finest red wines from renowned wine-producing regions, enhancing their credibility. While medals can assist consumers in identifying quality wines, personal preference should guide purchasing decisions. Therefore, while award-winning wines may appeal to a broad audience, individual tastes will prevail.
