Elevate Your Wine Experience: The Right Way to Order Wine by the Glass

Chris Lehoux, May 15, 2026

When you order wine by the glass at a restaurant, the experience is often less ceremonious compared to ordering a bottle. Typically, the glass comes pre-filled without an opportunity to see the label or taste before fully committing. However, requesting your glass to be poured tableside can enhance this process and create a more engaging experience.

Albert Señor, the head sommelier at Quirat, emphasizes that presenting the bottle at the table increases transparency and builds trust. By seeing what they are drinking, guests can connect more intimately with the wine. This presentation not only adds a sense of occasion but assures that opting for a glass is just as special as choosing a bottle.

Wine is more than a beverage; it carries the story of its origins and production methods, as noted by Andy Fortgang of Canard. Seeing the label allows guests to appreciate the wine’s story, enhancing their overall experience. Erin Dudley, director of wine for Junebug, also believes wine labels play an essential role in communicating what’s inside the bottle, inherently a part of the winemaker’s craft.

The act of pouring wine tableside can alter perceptions of value. Kristina Hayden Bustamante from the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi believes it enhances confidence in what is being served. Guests feel a sense of importance and care when servers take the time to present the bottle and allow for tasting.

When considering whether to taste the wine before the full pour, presenting it at the table provides a natural opportunity for a sample. Señor affirms that this is less about protocol and more about reassurance, allowing guests to ensure their selection meets their expectations.

Despite the clear benefits of tableside service, it isn’t universally offered due to logistical challenges in busy restaurant settings. Some staff may struggle to balance efficiency and quality service. However, patrons are encouraged to politely ask for this service when ordering, keeping expectations manageable.

Ultimately, requesting a tableside pour can transform the experience of drinking wine by the glass, turning what is often a rushed process into a more deliberate and memorable event. It enhances the guest’s connection to the wine, making it a richer aspect of their dining experience.
