A Toast to Change: Wine Country’s Largest City to Welcome Its First Downtown Wine Bar

Chris Lehoux, June 5, 2026

Sommelier Morgan Gray is set to open a new wine bar named Frenchie’s in Santa Rosa, California, this summer, filling a gap in Wine Country, where the largest city lacks a dedicated downtown wine bar. Gray initially intended to establish Frenchie’s in Healdsburg, a bustling wine destination, but chose Santa Rosa after facing space challenges and recognizing that its rents were more affordable. The new venue will focus on California and French wines and will be located in a historic building with high ceilings and an exposed brick wall.

Despite Santa Rosa’s urban vibe, which typically attracts fewer wine tourists compared to its neighboring towns, there is a growing movement to revitalize its downtown area. Gray is optimistic about this development, as local shops and eateries are increasingly drawing attention and national chains.

However, opening a wine bar in the current market poses risks, considering the wine industry’s recent downturn and declining sales. Gray aims to make wine more approachable, countering the common perception of wine as an item reserved for special occasions. She aspires to shift this narrative by creating a welcoming atmosphere at Frenchie’s.

With over 300 wines available, primarily sourced from smaller, sustainable producers, Gray’s selection will feature both familiar and unconventional options, with an emphasis on exploration. The menu will include an array of small plates without a full kitchen, such as tuna tartine and duck liver mousse. Additionally, Gray plans to implement a retail wall for quick buys and establish quarterly wine clubs featuring different themes to enhance customer engagement.

By offering options for local delivery and creating unique experiences, Gray hopes to establish Frenchie’s as a community favorite rather than just another boutique wine bar.

Frenchie’s is expected to be a vibrant addition to Santa Rosa when it opens at 642 Fifth St., and is poised to redefine the local wine scene. For more information, visit frenchieswinebar.com.
