Meet the Wine Experts: Who Curates Costco’s Impressive Wine Selection?

Chris Lehoux, June 15, 2026

Costco, despite its vast warehouse format, is selective about its product offerings, carrying only about 4,000 SKUs, compared to the 30,000 typical for a supermarket. The responsibility of choosing wines to sell falls on a specialized team of beverage buyers, who curate selections based on value and local preferences. This team ensures that recognizable brands are present alongside regional and unique wines, allowing customers to discover a range of options from affordable selections like the $8 Kirkland Signature Côtes de Provence Rosé to rarities like a $6,000 three-pack of Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon.

One key to Costco’s wine selection is its commitment to competitive pricing. Former beverage executive Annette Alvarez-Peters explained that they strive to set prices about 20% lower than competitors, which helps attract a diverse clientele, from budget-conscious shoppers to gourmet enthusiasts like celebrity chef José Andrés.

Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand plays an essential role in their wine offerings. When the beverage team cannot find a wine that meets quality and price standards, they resort to creating Kirkland-branded wines. Instead of running their own vineyards, Costco collaborates with established winemakers worldwide. This partnership allows Costco to sell quality wines at lower prices, as marketing, which typically inflates a wine’s cost, is minimized for Kirkland products.

This strategy also enhances flexibility in their inventory, enabling Costco to fill any gaps in their offerings. If a particular wine style is in demand but not readily available, they can craft a Kirkland-branded option that meets customer preferences and pricing expectations.
