Nostalgic Sips: 8 Iconic Wine Brands from the ’70s That Made a Comeback

Chris Lehoux, August 4, 2026

The 1970s were a transformative decade for wine in America, amid a growing interest in wine culture sparked by figures like Julia Child and events like the "Judgment of Paris" tasting in 1976, which saw California wines triumph over established French varieties. As a result, affordable and sweet wines became popular, encouraging widespread consumption and making wine more accessible. Here are some notable brands from that era:

Mateus
Mateus rosé became iconic in the ’70s, popularizing pink wine in the U.S. with its sweet, slightly effervescent profile. Originally from Portugal, it was supported by its unique bottle design. Though still in production, it has adapted to modern trends, offering drier options that might revitalize its past popularity.

Blue Nun
Known for its Liebfraumilch, Blue Nun was a sensation in the ’70s and captured a global audience. The sweet German wine, hailed by fans like Elvis Presley, began to wane in popularity in the ’80s as tastes evolved toward drier wines. However, it remains available today, maintaining a nostalgic connection to the era.

André
California’s André sparkled as an affordable alternative to Champagne. Launched by E. & J. Gallo, it aimed at everyday luxury and became synonymous with the ’70s through its "Cold Duck" blend. Its easy availability and diverse styles continue to make it a familiar choice in stores.

Lancers
Competing with Mateus, Lancers emerged shortly after as another sweet, fizzy rosé that captured hearts for its easy drinkability. Initially sold in a ceramic jug, it also reached impressive sales figures during the decade, despite its lower-end reputation overshadowing the rosé category for future generations.

Riunite
Popularizing Lambrusco in the United States, Riunite rode the fizzy wine wave of the decade. Originally released in 1967, it gained traction through catchy marketing but also contributed to the association of Lambrusco with overly sweet wines, as consumers began to expect lighter, bubbly varieties.

Sutter Home
Famous for white Zinfandel, Sutter Home capitalized on an accidental discovery in the ’70s when fermentation halted prematurely, creating a sweet style that resonated with consumers. This led to a lasting brand presence, even as wine enthusiasts shifted towards drier options.

Boone’s Farm
Often remembered for its fruity concoctions, Boone’s Farm blurred the lines between wine and other spirits. Originally based on fermented apple juice, it transformed over time but remains a nostalgic favorite for many who experienced it as their first introduction to alcohol.

Italian Swiss Colony
Once a vibrant winery celebrated for its fun atmosphere and wine offerings, it reflected the wave of European influence on Californian winemaking. However, as preferences changed, the brand faded from contemporary relevance, even as its legacy lived on in wine history.

These brands not only defined a generation of wine drinking but also established a culture that blends nostalgia with a continuing evolution of taste.
