Fourteen acres of cabernet sauvignon stretch across the steep slopes of Atlas Peak, where roots dig deep into unforgiving rocky soil. This rugged terrain poses a challenging environment for grape cultivation, yet Philippe Langner thrives in it. He embodies the resilience of the very vines he tends.

Born in El Salvador to a German father and Parisian mother, Langner’s childhood was marked by frequent relocations to countries like Bangladesh and Colombia, hardly conducive to nurturing a passion for winemaking. Despite earning two agronomy degrees, he found himself pondering a fate limited to gardening and briefly dabbled in banking in Paris. That experience, however, clarified his desire to create. He left for a job at a French château where he encountered renowned wine consultants Jacques Boissenot and Michel Rolland, leading mentors in the industry with differing philosophies.

After four years in France, Langner moved to Napa Valley. He honed his skills at Sullivan Cellars, producing notable cabernets even in challenging vintages. However, the call for independence led him to establish Hesperian Wines in 2004 after purchasing a vineyard more than 1,300 feet high on Atlas Peak. The journey was fraught with difficulties: a devastating flower shatter in 2015 resulted in a barren crop, while wildfires damaged his vineyard in subsequent years, including one that came perilously close in 2020.

Despite these setbacks, Langner remained resolute. "Absolutely not," he insists when asked if he considered giving up, even as this year’s adverse weather conditions posed threats to his harvest.

Langner’s trials have helped him craft exceptional wines infused with both passion and perseverance. Each day, he personally oversees the 14 acres of his Kitoko vineyard, nurturing the vines based on their unique micro-environments. The cruel soil that characterizes the land yields inherently high-quality fruit. "The vines suffer more. Color comes naturally, so I don’t need a cold soak," he explains, emphasizing the necessity of adapting to the conditions.

Compared to his earlier vintages, which were characterized by harsh tannins, Langner’s current cabernets exemplify grace and approachability: soft yet structured enough to promise ages of enjoyment. "The pendulum is swinging back," he observes, referring to consumer preferences shifting away from overly ripe, high-alcohol wines.

Langner’s offerings include three cabernets: the 2022 Hesperian “Pawa” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, blending Kitoko fruit with southern Napa grapes; the Hesperian “Witha,” a harmonious fusion of early harvest Kitoko fruit and Coombsville grapes; and the flagship 2022 Hesperian Kitoko Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the distinctive rocky terroir.

Langner has intertwined his appreciation for language and culture into his wines. "Hesperian," rooted in Ancient Greek, refers to the west, and "Kitoko" translates to "beautiful" in Lingala, the language of his childhood in Zaire.
