Wine, Beer, or Spirits? Discover the Surprising Health Insights from a Comprehensive Study

Chris Lehoux, August 10, 2026

A recent large-scale study involving over 340,000 adults revealed important insights into the relationship between alcohol consumption, specifically the type of alcohol, and health outcomes. The research, highlighted during the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session, showed that heavy drinking is detrimental to health regardless of the beverage type. However, at lower to moderate consumption levels, the effects diverged significantly across different alcoholic drinks.

Conducted using data from the UK Biobank study, the research analyzed the alcohol intake and mortality rates of participants between 2006 and 2022. Participants were categorized based on their daily or weekly alcohol consumption into groups ranging from never/occasional drinkers to heavy drinkers. They found that those in the high consumption category faced a 24% increased risk of death from any cause, a 36% higher risk of cancer-related death, and a 14% greater risk of death from heart disease compared to those who seldom drank.

Interestingly, when looking at low and moderate drinkers, a complex picture emerged: consumers of beer, cider, and spirits exhibited higher mortality rates compared to wine drinkers. Specifically, moderate wine drinkers enjoyed a 21% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to non-drinkers, whereas even low consumption of beer, cider, or spirits was linked to a 9% increased risk of cardiovascular-related death.

Researchers attributed these differing outcomes to various factors. One key consideration is the composition of the beverages; for instance, red wine contains polyphenols and antioxidants thought to confer cardioprotective benefits. Additionally, lifestyle habits associated with wine drinkers, such as healthier eating patterns and typically consuming wine during meals, might further explain the lower mortality risk.

Despite these findings, researchers caution that the observational nature of the study doesn’t establish direct causation. They recommend more rigorous randomized trials to clarify the health impacts of different types of alcohol. Furthermore, as the participants in the UK Biobank tend to be healthier than the general population, the results may not universally apply.

In summary, while heavy alcohol consumption is harmful, the type of alcohol consumed at moderate levels may have significantly different implications for health, highlighting the need to consider both quantity and quality in alcohol guidelines.
