Beer, Wine, or Liquor? New Study Reveals Which Alcoholic Beverage is Linked to Lower Death Risk Chris Lehoux, August 14, 2026 Recent studies have highlighted potential benefits of wine consumption, particularly in relation to mortality rates when compared to other alcoholic beverages such as beer and spirits. Research conducted with data from 340,924 participants in the UK Biobank indicated that wine is associated with lower mortality rates, while higher consumption of beer and spirits correlates with increased risk of death. The study, which assessed alcohol intake between 2006 and 2022, followed participants for an average of over 13 years. Findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans. The participants reported their drinking habits, categorized as never or occasional, low, moderate, or high. Those classified as high alcohol consumers—defined as over 40 grams daily for men and over 20 grams for women—faced a 24% higher risk of all-cause mortality and significantly higher risks for cancer and cardiovascular-related deaths compared to non-drinkers. Interestingly, moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death compared to those who abstained or drank infrequently, while low consumption of beer and spirits was associated with a 9% increased risk of cardiovascular death. Experts suggest a possible reason for wine’s association with lower mortality could be its content of beneficial compounds like polyphenols and antioxidants, which are thought to positively influence heart health and inflammation levels. However, researchers caution against generalizing these findings, emphasizing that individual health conditions and histories—especially regarding substance misuse—should inform alcohol consumption behaviors. Despite these findings, addiction specialists warn against encouraging daily alcohol intake for everyone and stress individual dietary and lifestyle factors affecting health outcomes. Overall, the study underscores the complexity of alcohol consumption and its effects on health, recommending more high-quality research to further explore the links between beverage type and mortality risk.
