Examining Wine’s Consumer Challenge: The Struggle with Everyday Relevance

Chris Lehoux, August 27, 2026

Wine consumption among younger drinkers is declining, not due to a distaste for the beverage, but rather because many do not see how it fits into their everyday lives. Recent research from the Oakland-based marketing agency Material indicates that while wine is generally viewed as welcoming and enjoyable, it is often associated with tradition and special occasions rather than casual, daily enjoyment.

During a recent webinar hosted by the Wine Market Council, insights shared by Machias Turner and Caroline Hisey emphasized that wine’s challenge lies in its relevance to younger generations. As Michelle Egan, the council’s new president, stated: “Wine may not have as much of an image problem as it does a relevance problem.”

The study’s findings suggest that consumers need wine to be more approachable. Material called for broader representations of wine, recommending that perceived rules be relaxed to encourage easier exploration, along with improved ways of discovering and pairing wines.

The survey targeted 900 U.S. alcohol consumers and segmented them into core wine drinkers, marginal drinkers, and non-adopters, including both younger generations and older cohorts. The data reiterated earlier findings that many consumers, particularly non-adopters, lack an understanding of common wine terms, which diminishes their confidence when selecting wine.

Interestingly, relaxation or unwinding was a key reason for 56% of participants when choosing what to drink at home, followed by taste and flavor for 49%, and feeling like a treat or reward for 29%.

Although traditional wine drinking remains popular—with 67% of core and marginal consumers enjoying it solo—modern trends show that younger drinkers are more inclined to experiment with cocktails and other formats, such as chilling wine or mixing it with non-alcoholic beverages.

Discovery plays a significant role in wine consumption; 59% of respondents who drink wine in diverse ways cite inspiration from friends or family, while 48% were influenced by outings to restaurants or wineries. Social media influence was also notable, guiding 30% to explore more about wine.

To resonate with potential consumers, the study suggests enhanced marketing strategies across platforms, particularly social media, where visibility for wine is currently lower compared to other alcoholic beverages. Content that is practical and easily digestible—such as food pairing ideas, wine selection tips, and taste descriptions—could enhance engagement.

Respondents expressed a desire for simplified experiences with wine. Common suggestions included easy food-pairing ideas (81%), simplified labels (79%), and affordable tasting opportunities (78%). Guided tastings and relaxed wine experiences scored high interest as well.

The findings reflect a significant message to wineries: to adapt by making wine easy to approach and understand. By addressing concerns of formality and everyday relevance, producers can engage younger consumers more effectively. Suggestions for improvement include everyday pairing videos, variety packs, and casual tasting events that align with modern lifestyles.
