Reviving History: Campo’s Vintage Wine Train Returns This Fall Featuring FDR’s Historic Rail Car Chris Lehoux, September 13, 2026 Southern California’s only wine train is making a return this fall. The Backcountry Wine Train, departing from the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, will have its inaugural runs on October 4 at noon and 3 p.m. This 90-minute journey takes riders through the picturesque highlands of eastern San Diego County aboard a vintage train. During the ride, guests can enjoy a curated six-glass wine tasting featuring selections from local Southern California wineries, coupled with individual charcuterie plates and macaroons from a local bakery. For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, a crafted nonalcoholic beverage tasting flight is also available. However, riders must be at least 21 years old to participate. Ticket Options Tickets are available in three tiers. Premium Class: $100 per person, which includes access to a 1920s restored train car. First Class: $150 per person, offering two-person or four-person tables plus an additional glass of sparkling wine or nonalcoholic cider. First-class guests will also have access to the train’s open-air platform and parlor area. VIP Experience: Priced at $250 per person, this option requires booking an entire car (up to eight guests) with personalized tableside service from a sommelier, Lisa Redwine. Redwine, a commendable figure in the wine industry, has an impressive background, having passed the Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced Exam in 2010 and currently serves as General Manager and Wine Director at Burtech Family Vineyard Winery. The Historic Pullman Car The train features the Robert Peary, a Pullman car with a notable history as it was used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt 34 times between 1934 and 1936. Originally built in 1927, it serves as a luxury option for guests and is now available for private charters and events. The route of the train itself has a rich history, constructed between 1907 and 1919 by John D. Spreckels, establishing a challenging link for the San Diego region through difficult mountain and desert terrain. An All-Volunteer Operation The entire operation is run by the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association, which has been operating since 1961 with the help of volunteer crews. The museum boasts a large collection of historic railroad equipment, highlighting the significance of railroad history in Southern California. Local Wine Industry The wines featured on the train represent a local industry with deep roots, boasting 172 wineries in San Diego County. This region is recognized for its diverse grape varieties and includes three federally designated American Viticultural Areas. Limited Runs The Backcountry Wine Train will operate for a limited time before transitioning to seasonal offerings that include events like the Pumpkin Express and the North Pole Limited. Guests interested in the wine train experience should check with the museum for accessibility details. For further information or to book tickets, visit the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum website.
