Uncorking Success: Gavin Newsom’s Journey Through the Wine World

Chris Lehoux, October 5, 2026

Gavin Newsom, long before his political career, had an ambition rooted in his passion for wine: to make fine wine more accessible to everyday consumers. His love for wine was nurtured by his father, serving as a connection point between them. This connection ultimately drove him to co-found the PlumpJack wine shop in San Francisco in 1992, alongside a group of partners including oil heir and composer Gordon Getty. The store’s name pays homage to Sir John Falstaff, a Shakespeare character known for his irreverence, reflecting the group’s aim to demystify fine wine.

Newsom’s journey into the political arena started when he was required to install a mop sink in his wine shop by the city’s health department, leading him to serve on the San Francisco Parking and Traffic Commission, then the Board of Supervisors, and later as mayor in 2003. He placed his ownership interests in the PlumpJack Group into a blind trust upon becoming governor in 2018, yet he retains a profound appreciation for fine wines, particularly those from regions like Napa, Burgundy, and Italy.

In an interview, Newsom reflected on his initial interest in wine and how it was a way for him to bond with his father, providing a medium for communication that felt natural. Discussing the inception of PlumpJack, he noted how he was driven by the desire to create a wine shop that was neither a discount outlet nor an exclusive establishment where only connoisseurs felt comfortable.

As PlumpJack flourished, it led to the establishment of restaurants and wineries, with the philosophy of offering great wines at reasonable prices. Newsom described previous favorites like Groth and Silver Oak Cabernet, alongside his love for varied wines, emphasizing his preference for drinking and sharing over collecting.

Addressing recent challenges in California’s wine industry, such as oversupply leading to growers pulling out vines, Newsom explained the complexities of government intervention in agriculture but stressed the importance of supporting all sectors involved in the industry, including hundreds of thousands of jobs tied to it. He noted how external political factors, like tariffs and trade issues, have far-reaching implications for California’s wine market.

Regarding the title of his book, Young Man in a Hurry, it originated from an article that critiqued him but evolved into a self-reflection on his life’s journey, ambition, and personal growth. Newsom hopes that readers come away with a deeper understanding of him as a multifaceted individual, rather than a simplistic portrayal.

In a light-hearted closing to the interview, he quipped about preferring any wine but Trump Wine at a White House dinner, highlighting the blend of seriousness and humor that characterizes his approach to both wine and politics.
