Unconventional Trick: Opening a Wine Bottle with a Bike Pump Chris Lehoux, March 5, 2024 If you find yourself without a corkscrew when opening a bottle of wine or simply want to impress your friends, head out to the garage and grab your bicycle pump. Bicycle pumps are super effective for putting air in tires, basketballs, and, believe it or not, your wine bottle. The air pressure causes the corkscrew to rise so that you can pull it out, leaving you with a perfectly opened bottle of wine to enjoy (without pieces of cork in your glass). To do this creative corkscrew alternative, after inserting a clean needle into your bicycle pump, push the needle into the cork until you can see it coming out through the opposite end of the cork in the bottle, and slowly pump air into it. Another method that works if the needle isn’t long enough to go through the cork, is to insert the needle on the side of the cork so that it’s wedged between the cork and the side of the bottle. Either way, the air pressure will cause the cork to rise out of the bottle after just a couple of pumps. Just make sure to take caution and pump slowly to allow the cork to rise enough to pull it out with your hands or pliers/tweezers. If done carefully, this wine bottle opening hack works great in a pinch. If you’re a fan of this method you might consider buying an air-pressure wine opener that works similarly but is likely safer and easier to use. However, being on vacation or enjoying a picnic is when the absence of a corkscrew is felt the most. Unfortunately, a bicycle pump is not commonly found in these scenarios. Imagine this – you are at your spot, you have your bottle of wine out, and no corkscrew. Do you surrender? Absolutely not. It’s highly possible you have a key with you, which can be used to uncork the bottle. This method does need some effort – clean the most jagged-looking key on your keychain, insert it into the cork on a slight curve, and with the help of your thumbs, twist the key to break the cork’s seal. Keep rotating the key and gradually pulling upwards. The cork might break a bit, but you should be able to keep rotating and pulling as long as the key is still inserted. Once it’s visibly out, pull it out entirely using a towel for grip, and check your wine for cork pieces. Your friends and family are sure to be impressed by your knack for uncorking wine bottles anywhere, anytime once you master this trick. Let’s consider a scenario where you have neither a corkscrew nor keys, and a bicycle pump is not accessible. Over time, people have discovered other ways to open wine without a corkscrew, but safety always comes first. Smashing your wine bottle against the wall or using a shoe to force the cork out are risky tactics. It is quite clear, these methods can cause the glass to shatter, creating a mess and posing a risk of injury. Likewise, applying heat poses a similar risk – a dangerous TikTok hack went viral, where a flat iron was used to uncork wine bottles. However, since high heat can shatter glass, this is not recommended. Instead, in a pinch, try the reverse corkscrew method which might be one of the safest ways to get your wine flowing. Rather than pulling the cork out, apply a blunt instrument like a marker, tube of lipstick, or spoon handle to push the cork into the bottle. A kitchen utensil like a rolling pin can be used to lightly tap the blunt object and push the cork further down. While your cork may end up floating in your wine, the bottle will, however, be open and the wine can be poured. Bear in mind that if you’re opening an older bottle, the cork might be more prone to splintering. Should you find cork bits in the bottle after doing this, be certain to pour the wine through a strainer to prevent them from getting into your glass. Read the original article on Daily Meal.
