Danny Meyer Sets to Dine and Redefine at NYC’s Iconic Revolving Restaurant Chris Lehoux, October 11, 2024 Union Square Hospitality Group is set to transform the View Restaurant & Lounge located atop the Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square, with plans for its reopening this winter. This winter, Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) along with the New York Marriott Marquis hotel are planning to reimagine the View Restaurant & Lounge, the only revolving restaurant in New York City. Originally opened in 1985, the View became a favored location for tourists and large gatherings, including the annual Wine Spectator New York Wine Experience, providing diners with breathtaking 360-degree vistas of the iconic New York skyline before its closure in 2020. USHG, founded by prominent restaurateur Danny Meyer, who now holds the position of executive chairman, is recognized for its numerous Wine Spectator Restaurant Award recipients, including Grand Award winner the Modern. The Marriott Marquis, with its strategic location and panoramic views of Times Square and the Theater District, serves not only as a hotel but also as a vibrant entertainment hub, hosting Broadway performances, New Year’s Eve festivities, and more. “The New York Marriott Marquis and USHG were both established in 1985 and have significantly contributed to transforming the hospitality scene in New York over the last four decades,” Meyer stated. “By merging exceptional cuisine with genuine hospitality, we aspire to create a remarkable dining and evening entertainment experience right in the heart of the Broadway Theater District, appealing to both locals and tourists.” Revolving restaurants have seen a decline in popularity across the United States since their peak era, which was sparked by the iconic Seattle Space Needle and its restaurant during the Century 21 Exposition in 1962. The View has been a fixture at the Marriott Marquis since it opened, most recently operating as an all-you-can-eat buffet. USHG has partnered with the hotel in recent years to enhance its catering services and dining options. Rockwell Group, the design firm known for recent projects like Gracious Hospitality Management’s COQODAQ and José Andrés’ Zaytinya in New York City, is currently rethinking the layout of The View, which occupies the 48th and 47th floors of the Marriott Marquis, and has temporarily suspended its rotation. The new concept developed by USHG aims to revive the charm of traditional supper clubs and will feature two distinct experiences. Guests arriving on the 48th floor will find a 20-seat bar and lounge offering small plates and raw bar selections. A spiral staircase will lead diners to the main dining area, where the menu will include modern takes on American classics, elaborate desserts, and refined cocktails. The USHG team intends for the new iteration of The View to have an extensive wine program, with further details expected soon. Currently, an executive chef and a beverage director for the venture have yet to be announced.
