Raghni Naidu and the Art of Wine: A Personal Statement or Something More? Chris Lehoux, October 19, 2024 Pouring wine in glasses Is every bottle of wine a “personal statement” of the winemaker and their story? Does it have to be? I found myself pondering this question as I got ready to sample a selection of wines from Raghni Naidu. Her journey is incredibly inspiring – Naidu Wines stands as the first winery in the US owned by a female Indian immigrant. This compelling narrative makes it impossible for me to separate her story from the wines encased in the Naidu-labeled bottles. I was already familiar with the Naidu narrative, yet as a test, I chose not to disclose it to the group of friends and wine lovers who accompanied me in tasting a selection of four Naidu wines. My goal was to gauge the tasters’ responses to the wines as distinct entities, providing only minimal information about their shared heritage from the same winemaker, and then delve into the unique circumstances surrounding their creation and market positioning. Did the wines stand on their own and resonate with the taster’s appreciation for their unique qualities? Absolutely. The essence of the tasters’ feedback can be encapsulated as follows: The 2022 Catie’s Corner Vineyard Chardonnay [120 cases produced, $49.99] was enjoyable, if not particularly distinctive within the realm of North Coast California Chardonnays. Meanwhile, the 2022 Cassata Vineyard Cabernet Franc [150 cases produced, $69.99] served as the perfect conclusion to the evening, harmonizing beautifully with the later courses and its richer body and texture. This Cab Franc elegantly capped the evening with its soft, leathery finish. Nevertheless, the bulk of the discussion centered around the two Pinot Noirs from Naidu. The guests quickly discerned which of the two Pinots we sampled would be regarded as the pricier option, and they could also predict which wine would garner more extensive and arguably more insightful tasting notes from critics. However, the Pinot that typically fits these expectations was not the one favored by this particular group of tasters on this occasion. Our group showed a clear preference for the 2021 Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley [150 cases produced, $64.99] over the 2021 Pinot Noir Estate from the Sonoma Coast [270 cases produced, $74.99]. The critical factor was that the Russian River Valley Pinot – the more affordable choice – was perceived by tasters as more relaxed, approachable, and a wine they wished to revisit. Although the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, with its coastal roots and slightly lower alcohol content, appeared to be the wine I would have typically preferred, I found myself aligning with the others, as we collectively leaned towards the Russian River Valley Pinot. This leads me back to the question posed at the start of this piece. Is every bottle of wine a “personal statement” of the winemaker and their narrative? Does it necessarily need to be, or should it be viewed in that light? The straightforward answer is no. Both consumers and professionals taste wines frequently that stand apart from their origins, regardless of how engaging that narrative may be. However, winemakers may offer a different perspective on the matter: Raghni Naidu’s Cabernet Franc truly reflects her personal experience with that grape from that specific region in that vintage, creating a markedly different personal statement compared to the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. While I would expect some common ground in these personal statements regarding philosophy, style, and approach, it is entirely feasible to enjoy and appreciate the wines without being aware of any narratives or overlaps. It’s entirely feasible to assess how the narrative of a winemaker enriches the experiences of their wines for both consumers and the trade. For instance, we could “measure” this enhancement by observing how much longer our group lingered over the wines, engaging in questions and discussions that stemmed from specific elements of Naidu’s story once I shared them: How does Naidu’s upbringing in Punjab, India, influence her winemaking choices? What impact did her experiences in Melbourne, Australia, during her young adulthood have on her craft? And how does her current life in northern California shape her wine production? Additionally, how is the wine community broadening in cultural and geographical diversity, moving beyond the traditionally narrow Eurocentric perspective? For me, the duration of our discussions and the resulting depth of conversation signify that bottles of wine can act as “personal statements” of their makers and their stories. While not every wine carries a gripping narrative, when a compelling story is present, and it enhances the drinking experience, its intrinsic value surpasses the price displayed on the shelf.
