Bid on Culinary History: Experience Late Chef Charlie Trotter’s Dream Meal with Château Margaux 1900

Chris Lehoux, November 12, 2024

When asked about his last meal, the late chef Charlie Trotter offered a vague notion of the food, but spoke specifically about the wine he desired—a bottle of Château Margaux 1900. This elegant pairing has now been brought to life at Emeril Lagasse’s charity auction, Carnivale du Vin, on November 16 in New Orleans. The lot titled "Chef Charlie Trotter’s Legacy" allows bidders to secure a dinner for eight, featuring Trotter’s dream meal along with the coveted wine from his personal cellar.

Trotter and Lagasse were close friends and culinary trailblazers, both gaining recognition in the 1980s when fine dining flourished in America. Trotter’s restaurant, Charlie Trotter’s, opened in 1987 with a pioneering approach to tasting menus and a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. His impressive wine collection received a Grand Award in 1993, highlighting significant selections from Burgundy, the Rhône, and California. Tragically, Trotter passed away in 2013 at the age of 54.

In honor of his late friend, Chef Emeril Lagasse is auctioning this unique culinary experience, which includes a pairing of Trotter’s ideal meal with the Château Margaux, donated by Trotter’s widow, Rochelle.

Emeril’s foundation, established to support children’s education through culinary and nutritional programs, has already raised over $20 million since its inception. This year’s auction will also prominently feature wines, including a pair of legendary bottles donated by Paul and Suzie Frank of Napa’s Gemstone Vineyard—one bottle each of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 1973 and Château Montelena Chardonnay 1973, both pivotal in the historical Paris Tasting of 1976.

Bidders can participate in person or through proxy on Carnivale du Vin’s website, making this a unique opportunity to indulge in fine dining and classic wines while supporting a noble cause.
