Exploring New Trends in Romanian Wine: A Journey Through Innovation and Tradition

Chris Lehoux, November 15, 2024

Romania’s wine industry is witnessing a remarkable evolution as it adapts to modern consumer preferences and market demands. With the growth of Eastern Europe as a tourist destination, wine lovers are increasingly discovering the nuances of Romanian wines, particularly after the country pivoted from supplying bulk wines to focusing on quality.

The Romanian terroir is particularly suited for wine production, with key regions such as the Dealu Mare near Bucharest, Transylvania, and areas around the Black Sea showcasing a variety of international and indigenous grape varieties. Winemaker Paul Fulea of Crama Histria highlights that Romanian winemakers are dedicated to producing higher-quality wines while embracing local grape varieties like Fetească Neagră and Fetească Albă.

The shift towards fine wine production gained momentum after Romania joined the European Union in 2007, with an increase in investments and new wineries fueled by competition in the domestic market. Fulea notes that while there was a lag in evolving wine production due to the country’s historical context, a new generation of winemakers is now committed to refining the industry, employing modern techniques and marketing strategies to target the export market.

Notably, Romanian producers are striving to develop a distinct wine style, significantly influenced by climate change and market dynamics. The introduction of lighter bottles and innovative approaches to aging wines, including underwater aging, reflect the industry’s commitment to sustainability and quality.

Fulea’s winery, established in 2015, illustrates this commitment to quality over quantity, with a goal of crafting exceptional vegan wines that showcase the unique terroir of Dobrogea. As Romanian wines make their mark, the focus remains on offering compelling flavor profiles that appeal to new consumers while honoring the country’s rich viticultural heritage.
