Exciting Bidding War: Tignanello Super Tuscan Fetches High Prices at Christie’s Super Auction

Chris Lehoux, December 9, 2024

Bottles of Marchesi Antinori’s super Tuscan Tignanello fetched nearly $190,000 at a London auction organized by Christie’s on November 26 and 27. This auction commemorated the 50th anniversary of the release of the first vintage, Tignanello 1971. A total of 40 lots were sold, comprising 170 bottles and a full barrel, presenting collectors a unique opportunity to acquire bottles directly from the Antinori cellars.

Among the diverse offerings were standard bottles, numerous magnums, double magnums, imperials, and a rare balthazar, which is a sizable 12-liter bottle. The auction highlighted the wine’s significant historical impact, having transformed Italian winemaking upon its release.

The highest-priced lot, a 225-liter barrique of the 2024 vintage, was sold for just over $60,000. The buyer will receive one 15-liter bottle and the rest in their preferred format once the wine is ready for bottling. Close behind was a set featuring ten bottles of the acclaimed 2021 vintage, fetching around $27,000 and including a VIP tasting experience at Tenuta Tignanello. Other noteworthy sales included two bottles from the inaugural 1971 vintage, which sold for approximately $950 and $1,000 each.

Renzo Cotarella, CEO and head winemaker, emphasized the importance of Tignanello in leading Antinori towards crafting high-quality wines that represent "identity and authenticity." Cotarella noted the excitement among collectors, acknowledging how Tignanello not only changed the trajectory of their winery but also showcased the potential of Italian wine globally.
