Celebrating 25 Years of the Wine-Soaked Krewe of Cork: Where Mardi Gras and New Orleans Hospitality Unite

Chris Lehoux, February 18, 2025

It began with a wine-soaked lunch 25 years ago, a concept that would eventually lead to the formation of the Krewe of Cork—a Carnival club that embraces wine, camaraderie, and the joyful spirit of New Orleans. The krewe’s unique origins are a celebration of not just Mardi Gras, but also the vibrant culture of hospitality that defines the city.

The Krewe of Cork hosts its annual parade, this year taking place on February 21 at 3 p.m., starting at the Court of Two Sisters and concluding at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. This parade is characterized by its lively atmosphere, complete with a marching band, plenty of wine, and creative costumes revolving around wine themes. Leading the event each year is king for life, Patrick van Hoorebeck, the original architect of the famed Friday lunch special dubbed “Thank God It’s Cork Day!” at the former Bistro at the Maison de Ville, where the concept of the krewe was born.

During one particular festive Friday lunch in 2000, the joyous diners were inspired to recreate the experience in a spirited street parade, which led to the establishment of this now-beloved tradition complete with its own queen and lasting customs that mirror New Orleans’ festive culture.

As the parade unfolds, thousands gather to witness the spectacle. Without the use of floats, members parade along with wagons monitored by the “wine police,” ensuring the signature goblets remain filled. Spectators are eagerly positioned to grab medallions shaped like grape clusters, while the day’s grand marshal—this year, Jean-Charles Boisset from Boisset Collection—receives royal treatment throughout the festivities.

Serving as a vibrant representation of wine culture, the Krewe of Cork continues to foster connections through monthly gatherings and celebrations, always rooted in the joy of sharing a good bottle of wine. Patrick van Hoorebeck succinctly sums up the essence of the krewe: “A nice bottle of wine brings people together and they can become family.”
