Farewell to a New Orleans Treasure: Beloved Warehouse Closing After 32 Years of Serving Wine, Beer, and Spirits

Chris Lehoux, March 18, 2025

Surrounded by stacks of hard seltzers and rows of wine bottles, Elio’s Wine Warehouse is closing its doors after 32 years of serving New Orleans. The popular establishment announced on social media that it will close at the end of May, prompting an outpouring of fond memories and sadness from its loyal patrons. Customers expressed their concern over where they would source their rum and kegs once the warehouse ceased operations.

Elio’s was established by Elio Todaro, an Italian immigrant, who opened the warehouse in 1993 in the Fontainebleau neighborhood, near Tulane and Loyola universities. The business was a continuation of his family’s venture in the city, following the opening of Vieux Carre Wine and Spirits in the French Quarter in 1987.

Todaro passed away in 2013, but his legacy lives on through the warehouse. He was known for his passion for wine and his engaging personality, making each customer feel welcome. Craig Fasino, former chief financial officer at Felipe’s Taqueria (another establishment co-owned by Todaro), reminisced about how the atmosphere at Elio’s was always uplifting.

As mariachi music played from the restaurant next door, a cheerful vibe filled the warehouse despite the impending closure. The store offered a mix of extensive wine varieties, featuring detailed notes on food pairings, alongside trendy beverages like THC-infused seltzers, appealing especially to the nearby college demographic.

Images of Todaro adorn the walls, highlighting his influence and contribution to the New Orleans community. As patrons prepare to bid farewell to a beloved staple, they reflect on the many cherished moments shared within its walls, celebrating not just the fine wines but also the friendships built over the years.

Elio’s Wine Warehouse will be missed, but its impact on the community and the memories created will undoubtedly endure.
