Kansas Archbishop Claims Satanic Group Pilfered Sacred Wine and Wafers for Statehouse ‘Black Mass’ Event

Chris Lehoux, March 21, 2025

A Kansas bishop has raised concerns about a Satanic group allegedly stealing sacred wine and wafers intended for a "Black Mass" planned for the state capitol. Kansas City Catholic Archbishop Joseph Naumann filed a lawsuit against Satanic Grotto leaders Travis Roberts and Michael Stewart in Leavenworth District Court. The archbishop’s accusation includes claims of "theft, fraud, deception, wrongful taking, or other form of misappropriation," emphasizing that consecrated hosts and wine are considered the body and blood of Jesus Christ and can only enter the hands of Satanists with malicious intent.

In response, Stewart stated that their supplies were purchased online, referring to them as "coming from Pope Amazon." He characterized the upcoming Black Mass, scheduled for March 28, as an expressive rite involving symbolic actions such as tearing a book and breaking a cross, which he described as a means of catharsis rather than a traditional worship of the devil.

The event has sparked a significant legislative debate, with state lawmakers discussing its implications as it challenges First Amendment rights. Initially slated for the statehouse rotunda, Governor Laura Kelly permitted the event to proceed but mandated it occurs outside, labeling it "insulting" and "denigrating." The archbishop argued that the ceremony aims to "intentionally cause harm" to the Catholic community.

Despite the uproar, Stewart maintains his commitment to the cause, asserting he would be willing to face jail time for their beliefs. He emphasizes that Satanists do not actually worship the devil, but rather hold a philosophy of individual empowerment and liberty, using the figure of Satan symbolically. Local lawmakers, however, have expressed skepticism about the group’s motives, alleging they are simply seeking attention.
