Cabernet Crackdown: How Looming Tariffs Could Skyrocket Wine Prices

Chris Lehoux, March 22, 2025

A potential 200% tariff on European Union wines is set to take effect on April 2, putting U.S. wine shops and restaurants that depend on EU imports at risk of significant price hikes and supply disruptions.

President Trump’s proposed tariff comes in retaliation for the EU’s tariffs on American steel and aluminum. Wine shop owners like Cam Davis from LouElla in Durham are already feeling the impact of this impending tariff. Predominantly stocking EU wines, Davis’s shop could see prices of popular wines jump drastically. For instance, a bottle normally priced at $15 could rise to $30, diminishing the value perceived by customers.

Davis attributes the quality and affordability of European wines to centuries of winemaking tradition. He expressed concern over the potential halt of EU wine imports, stating, “It’s actually a blockade,” as it could lead to empty shelves and further shortages in supplies.

Jay Murrie of Piedmont Wine Imports elaborated on the implications of such a drastic tariff. He explained that removing a significant portion of wine supply would lead to increased prices for what remains, creating a challenging market dynamic. The U.S. heavily relies on wines from France, Italy, and Spain, which produced over 12.5 million tons of wine in 2021—far surpassing other wine-producing countries.

This tariff could also have dire consequences for the hospitality industry, which is still recovering from pandemic-related closures. Murrie noted that many restaurants rely on wine sales for profitability, and consumers may be unwilling to pay inflated prices for a glass of wine. Industry professionals like Greg Pfaender predict that this could lead to job losses across the sector.

The situation highlights the significance of European wines not just as beverages, but as an essential component of local economies and cultures, intertwined with traditions and the livelihoods of many individuals within the hospitality and export sectors.
