Celebrating 30 Years of Tuscan Wine: A Collaboration Between Napa Valley and Tuscany Leaders

A historic Tuscan wine vertical was recently held at Christie’s Auction House in New York City, highlighting the remarkable collaboration between two legendary wine families: Frescobaldi of Tuscany and Mondavi of Napa Valley.

The event was designed to commemorate 30 years of Tenuta Luce’s Luce della Vite wines, under the guidance of winemaker Alessandro Marini. Participants experienced a tasting of various vintage expressions of this unique wine, which artfully combines the classic Sangiovese grape with Merlot—two varieties that would typically seem incompatible.

The Frescobaldi family, hailing from a lineage that spans 700 years in Tuscany, boasts extensive knowledge of the Sangiovese grape, while also having decades of experience with Merlot through their estate, CastelGiocondo. This dual expertise allows them to craft wines that showcase the best attributes of both grapes. Although Robert Mondavi passed away in 2008, the Frescobaldi family continues to honor his legacy through this partnership.

The tasting took participants through different vintages from 1994, the beginning of this endeavor, to 2022. Even the lesser-regarded years, such as 2002, demonstrated the enduring quality of Luce wines, proving that exceptional producers can create remarkable wines even in challenging vintage conditions. The standout vintages presented included 2009, 2015, 2016, and 2019, while the newly released 2022 vintage was particularly noted for its excellence.

The venue at Christie’s, home to an array of exquisite art, lent an air of grandeur to the event. As guests moved through the hallways adorned with historical masterpieces, it became clear that both the wines and the artistry shared a common aspiration for greatness and revolution—reflecting the dedication and craftsmanship of the legendary wine families involved.
