Imported Wine Prices Face Surge as New Trump Tariffs Impact Small Businesses

Chris Lehoux, April 10, 2025

Adam Williams, the owner of Ansley Wine Merchants in Atlanta, is preparing for a challenging situation as new tariffs announced by the Trump administration are set to increase the cost of imported wines and liquors. Starting soon, a 20% tariff on goods from the European Union will significantly raise prices, including popular selections such as a 2023 vintage Sancerre from France, which currently retails for around $45.

The National Association of Wine Retailers has expressed deep concern, predicting "significant revenue reductions, layoffs, and business closings." The U.S. relies heavily on wine imports from the European Union, particularly from countries like France and Italy, with sales of French wines projected to decline by at least 20% following the implementation of these tariffs.

Despite hopes that the tariffs might boost domestic wine sales, the National Association of Wine Retailers argues that these higher prices will lead consumers to cut back on non-essential purchases, such as wine.

Williams, who stocks around 1,500 different wine labels, most of which are from small family-owned vineyards overseas, is contemplating the impact of these changes on his business and his employees. He has noted a virtual halt in new shipments as distributors and importers take a "wait-and-see" approach regarding the tariffs.

Ryan Stanton, general manager of Ultimate Wine Distributors, also highlighted the uncertainty the tariffs bring, stating that much of their wine is ready to be imported but remains in limbo as they await clarity on the situation. He emphasized that while some support for domestic products is understandable, many wine varieties simply cannot be produced in the U.S.

The looming tariff increases promise to reshape the wine market significantly, leaving many in the wine retail sector uncertain about their future.
