Remembering Bill Stoller: The Legacy of an Oregon Vintner and Philanthropist at 74

Chris Lehoux, April 25, 2025

Bill Stoller, a distinguished Oregon vintner and philanthropist, passed away at the age of 74 in his sleep on April 24 at his home in Oklahoma City. He was instrumental in establishing the Chehalem and Stoller Family wineries, which have become crucial players in the Oregon wine scene.

Stoller was known for his immense contributions to the Willamette Valley wine community. "Bill Stoller exceeded all expectations," stated friend and winemaker Rollin Soles, highlighting the lasting impact of Stoller’s vision. Gary Mortensen, president of Stoller Wine Group, emphasized Stoller’s belief in the Oregon wine industry, recalling him as both an entrepreneur and a generous mentor.

Born on a turkey farm near Dayton, Oregon, Stoller graduated from Pacific University in 1974 and co-founded Express Employment Professionals, a major staffing company. His focus eventually returned to the wine industry, where he co-invested in Ridgecrest Vineyards in 1988, the first vineyard in what became the acclaimed Ribbon Ridge appellation.

In 1993, Stoller partnered in the founding of Chehalem, which he transformed into a leading winery. He also reclaimed his family’s turkey farm, planting vineyards that would evolve into Stoller Family Winery, known for its exceptional Pinot Noir.

Stoller’s commitment to sustainability was reflected in his efforts to create environmentally friendly practices in winemaking. His winery was the first in the world to achieve LEED Gold certification in 2006, setting precedents for energy-efficient buildings in the wine industry.

Alongside his sustainable ventures, Stoller was deeply involved in philanthropy, passionately working to revitalize Dayton. He also preserved the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, ensuring the continuation of one of the valley’s beloved attractions.

Stoller is survived by his second wife, LaRue, and five children. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence the Oregon wine industry for years to come.
