Mosel Meets Montrachet: Ernst Loosen’s Exciting New Burgundy Wine Initiative

Chris Lehoux, May 27, 2025

Acclaimed German vintner Ernst Loosen, recognized for his work at Weingut Dr. Loosen in the Mosel Valley, has launched a new wine project in Burgundy called Perron de Mypont. He has partnered with Manoël Bouchet, a Burgundy native and former barrel salesman, to establish a boutique négociant business focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines are set to debut in June in the United States.

Loosen expressed a long-standing love for Burgundy, dating back to his first visit in 1985 during an internship. Over the years, he has forged relationships with numerous top producers in the region. The partnership with Bouchet allows them to craft wines that embody tension, minimal oak influence, and a reflection of the site and vintage, appealing to both seasoned collectors and younger wine enthusiasts. They intend to utilize a combination of traditional Burgundy barrels and larger vessels, avoiding new oak and bâtonnage, and will age their wines on the lees, a technique Loosen has explored throughout his career.

The project is based at Vieux Château de Puligny-Montrachet, which Loosen acquired in 2019. This historic site has ties to the noble de Mypont family, who were aristocrats for centuries. Bouchet noted that the current landscape in Burgundy has changed significantly, making their approach as négociants appealing and strategically sound, allowing them to tap various sources for grapes and finished wines.

Loosen and Bouchet’s collaborative journey began in 2010 when they connected through mutual interests in wine distribution. Recognizing their shared passion for Burgundy, they decided to leverage the foundation of the Vieux Château to initiate their own négoce business. Despite acknowledging the challenging timing for launching new wines amidst economic pressures post-COVID, both are committed to their venture, driven by their enthusiasm for what Burgundy has to offer.
