US Wine Exports to Canada Experience Largest Decline in Over Two Decades

Chris Lehoux, June 15, 2025

U.S. wine exports to Canada, its largest market, witnessed a staggering decline in April, dropping by 93%. This marks the most significant decrease in over two decades, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau dating back to 2002. The steep decline is attributed to ongoing consumer and government boycotts of American products in response to U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.

This drop in Canadian imports has also affected the overall global wine export market, leading to a 41% decrease in U.S. wine exports for the month, succeeding a 28% decline in March. Karl Storchmann, executive director of the American Association of Wine Economists, commented that the wine industry is facing a crisis, exacerbated by the tariffs combined with a general decline in demand.

In 2024, Canada accounted for approximately one-third of the total value of U.S. wine exports. The situation escalated in March when Canadian provinces began pulling U.S.-sourced alcohol from government-operated liquor stores due to these tariffs, although some provinces have since resumed purchases.

Additionally, the broader economic landscape shows that wine consumption per capita has fallen over 50% from the early 1970s to 2022, signaling a long-term trend that may also be contributing to the downturn in wine trade. The overall economic challenges contribute to the declining wine market, as highlighted by economist John Dunham.

The impact of recent tariff disputes between the U.S. and China, with reciprocal tariffs reaching 125% on U.S. goods, has further complicated the export situation; however, recent discussions indicate a movement toward easing trade tensions.

This dramatic downturn does not just stem from political actions but also reflects changing consumer habits and broader economic conditions affecting the wine industry on a global scale.
