Local Wine Shop Braces for Impact: Preparing for Potential Tariffs

Chris Lehoux, July 18, 2025

Small businesses in the Tampa Bay Area anticipate the effects of upcoming tariffs, with one local wine shop feeling the pressure even before the measures take effect in August. Robert Sprentall, owner of Grape Bottle in Dunedin, notes that the uncertainty brought by the tariffs has already caused price increases and supply chain complications.

While traveling across Europe to find unique wines, Sprentall has witnessed shifts in the availability and pricing of products. He explains that as distributors become wary about future tariffs and potential liabilities in their inventories, they are raising prices in anticipation—a situation that has begun affecting his shop, even before any formal tariffs are implemented.

"We see it every day, where a wine that we are used to being able to get at a certain price is now higher… or just not available at all," Sprentall explained. He also mentioned that while switching to domestic wines is an option, many ingredients essential for winemaking, like French oak and cork from Spain or Portugal, are still imported, which could lead to unavoidable price hikes.

Despite the challenges, Sprentall strives to keep his prices manageable, continuing to source wines from around the globe. His regular customers like Brent Byler remain loyal, expressing that they will continue visiting even if prices increase.

This isn’t the first time Grape Bottle has faced adversity; a tornado caused significant damage to the shop two years ago. However, the resilience of both the business and its customers gives Sprentall hope. "We’ve developed a long relationship through disasters… it’s good to see our customers are just as resilient as we are here at Grape Bottle," he shared, pouring a glass for a patron.

The local community’s support is a silver lining amid the cloud of impending tariffs, as businesses like Grape Bottle navigate uncertain waters while maintaining a cherished connection with their customers.
