Unveiling Hidden Gems: A Girlfriends’ Getaway to the Best Wine Region You’ve Never Heard Of

Livermore Valley: A Hidden Gem for Wine Lovers

Nestled about 40 miles from San Francisco, Livermore Valley is California’s oldest wine region, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Napa and Sonoma. However, this lesser-known wine haven boasts a rich history, having produced exceptional wines for over a century.

Darcie Kent, the owner of Darcie Kent Estate Winery, encapsulates the valley’s charm, noting, “We’re hiding in plain sight.” The region, which is responsible for nearly 80% of all California’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, has been recognized at top wine competitions, including winning 174 medals at the prestigious 2023 San Francisco Chronicle wine competition.

On a recent girlfriends’ getaway, we arrived in Livermore Valley and checked into the Purple Orchid Wine Country Resort & Spa. This cozy resort is set against a backdrop of grapevines and olive orchards, offering modern amenities and evening wine tastings. Soon, our adventure in wine tasting began.

Our first stop was at Darcie Kent Estate Winery, where the delights of sparkling Gruner Veltliner awaited us. The winery’s beautiful 70-acre property features a modern tasting room adorned with original artwork and picnic areas. Here, Darcie and her daughter Amanda shared stories about their strong ties to the valley and their passion for winemaking.

After sampling their delicious wines, we made our way to The Cheese Parlor in downtown Livermore. This quaint shop offered a variety of artisanal cheeses paired perfectly with our wines, showcasing the local flavors of the valley.

Next, we visited McGrail Vineyards and Winery, where Heather McGrail shared her family’s wine journey—one sparked by friendships with renowned winemakers. We savored a lively Sauvignon Blanc along with a Cabernet Sauvignon and an oak-y Chardonnay, much to the delight of our palates.

For dinner, we opted for the lively Sons of Liberty Alehouse, before exploring sophisticated local dining spots like Range Life, known for its creative, locally influenced menu. The gastronomic options in Livermore were as enticing as the wine.

The next day, we stopped by Charles R Vineyards, enjoying a scenic hike and wine tasting amid picturesque views. Our guide introduced us to fascinating wine facts, enhancing our experience as we sipped Chardonnay and Petite Sirah.

We planned to explore bike trails but ultimately chose to unwind at the resort spa. However, our itinerary wasn’t complete without visiting the notable Concannon Vineyard and Wente Vineyards. Both wineries feature rich histories and impressive selections; Concannon, established in 1883, is known for "America’s First Petite Sirah," while Wente is recognized as the oldest continuously operated family-owned winery in the U.S., credited with cultivating the Wente Clone of Chardonnay.

Before heading home, we took advantage of the “You Sip. We Ship.” program, allowing us to bring some of the valley’s finest wines back with us, ensuring our memories linger long after our visit.

Livermore Valley is a hidden gem for wine enthusiasts, filled with friendly faces, award-winning vineyards, and a warm community spirit. For more information, visit the Livermore Valley Wine Community at www.LVwine.org.
