Experience Authentic Spanish Wine: San Diego Vineyard Revives Tradition in California

Chris Lehoux, September 24, 2025

A San Diego vineyard is merging authentic Spanish tradition with local winemaking, thanks to the collaboration between a San Diego native and a Spanish winemaker. Bruno Valdez, who has Mexican roots, owns 19 acres in Ramona, California, where he has planted nearly three acres exclusively with Spanish grape varieties, making it the only vineyard in San Diego County dedicated entirely to these grapes.

Valdez grows varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cariñena, Monastrell, Verdejo, and Garnacha Blanca. His journey to first harvest took four years involving extensive research and visits to various wine regions. Valdez traces his roots back to Spain, particularly Vizcaya and Pamplona, and maintains a deep love for Spanish culture despite his childhood dream of becoming a matador not coming to fruition.

During one of his visits to a Spanish winery, he formed a partnership with Joaco, a Spanish winemaker. This collaboration focused on crafting authentic sangria and Spanish wines. Joaco’s desire for a base to start his winery led him to work with Valdez.

For Valdez, the project transcends profit. It’s about passion and a connection to his Hispanic heritage while he and Joaco meticulously create wine and sangria that reflect their cultural roots in San Diego County. As Valdez tastes his developing wines, he reflects on his journey, noting that although profit is important, the love for their heritage drives their endeavor.
